Historical overview

A town in the cultural and culinary heart of Italy

Magliano, on the border between Lazio and Umbria, is Sabina's entrance door. Its location is along the Tiber valley, on a hill dominating A1 highway. From its Castel walls, the visitor can enjoy a wonderful view from the mount Soratte to the near Cimini mountains, until Umbria’s hills and  Martani mountains. The "city" – appellation given by the pope Borgia in 1945 – is an ideal location for excursionism between the hidden treasures of central Italy: from ancient Roman cities (Ocriculum, Faleri and Carsulae ) between Tuscia and Umbria to Sabina’s villages and the nature until art’s cities such as Spoleto and Todi. Land of extra virgin dop olive oil, doc wine and gastronomy, it is a paradise into the green for those who look for a good table, traditional items, respect of the environment, curiosity, art and culture in the heart of a hidden Italy.

Along  Roma  street,  it  is  possible  to  admire  the  umbertine  palace  of  the  family  Solimani-Mariotti. In the square – characterised by the fountain Unità d'Italia – dominates Vannicelli palace, Municipality’s location, in front of the Clock, a civic tower set in the ex-episcopal seminary of Don Bosco's propriety. In Sabina street there is Gori palace, seat of the archaeological civic museum, Sabins' museum. The exposition preserves one of the first examples of sabin alphabet. Inside some findings are preserved, from prehistoric worked flints to ceramics belonging to the Renaissance. Magliano Sabina is not only history, culture and landscapes. Magliano, thanks to its food and wine excellences, is also destination of those people who love good flavours and enjoy life in the nature not just because of oil, wine, and agricultural richness, but mostly because it is a borderland. Between Sabina,Tuscia and southern Umbria, the local cooking is an extraordinary and tasty contamination of traditions and experiences. You can find dishes like strozzapreti (a particular kind of spaghetti), pasta with chickpeas or beans, polenta with padellaccia of pork, sausages and mazzafegate (liver pork sausage with pieces of orange and garlic), grilled meat and lamb scottadito (it must be eaten hot). The hill landscapes are covered by high quality vineyards, DOC and Igt labeled (there are three winehouses). The masterpiece of Sabina is the extra virgin olive oil, really light and with low acidity : a DOC product bottled and commercialised right at the production place, Cantina dei Colli sabini, and other local producers.

Manifestations, events and shows – like the National Music Contest Città di Magliano Sabina, the piano prize Sergio Cafaro, the theater season of ATCL – take place in the Manlio Theater, which offers many classical and dialect theater operas. The theater tradition is probably linked with actors and singers who ran away from the holy See, when Magliano became the borderline of the Italy’s Reign in 1870. Particularly important and suggestive, Magliano hosts the historic commemoration with traditional dresses, which recalls the previous unification of Italy, when the city was under Rome's municipality. The summer season begins on the 15th of May with the celebration in honour of the patron St. Liberatore, thanks to Pro Loco and the several associations, with a program plentiful of manifestationsnot just in the city center, but also in the various locations of the municipal territory.

Did you know?

Magliano is the land of Sabina's people. His history is linked to this italic population, who developed it self here on the Tiber’s shores, in contact with the Umbro-Sabins and Falisci, an ancient latin population. It had a good relationship with Rome, thanks to a port river who was very active at that time. Melting pot of both populations and transhumance, old Magliano was first under Ocriculum’s Roman municipality, and from 1311 under Campidoglio, in this situations Magliano’s inhabitants could claim to become Roman citizens. In 1495, as the pope Alexander VI of Borgia wanted, it became the seat of the Sabina’s diocese, of which the Cathedral of Sabina population remains. Nowadays, the past lives again in the artistic and cultural heritage, full of secrets and curiosities. It is necessary to have a simple promenade in the historic center between churches and palaces, to become aware about that.

Places of interest

Madonna delle Grazie Church preserves a precious altar piece of Madonna della Misericordia, that according to the legend, it’s the result of a loot of the Venetian Republic captain’s Crusade. In its underground areas a proto-romanic crypta hides, with the fresco of St.Francesco’s milk miracle, which took place in Magliano, and the engraved signature of Federico of Aragon, king of Naples, in transit in the city in 1447. Sabins Cathedral, consecrated in 1498 and dedicated to St.Liberatore, proclaimed patron of the city after a dispute with St.Liberato, is full of fresco paintings, painted canvases and guards some singular chinese tapestries (unfortunately not visible). St.Peter Church is considerable, a jewel in the romanic style with a simple and elegant structure, with columns recovered from the Roman settlements of the zone.
