Historical overview

Forano rises on the west side elevations of the Sabin Mountains. From its height it dominates the Tiber Valley. After the fall of the Roman Empire a large depopulation of this area took place. In the following centuries, before becoming an independent municipality in 1262, Forano was first under Farfa Abbey domination and later many nobles owned it. After the destruction of Forum Jani (a market built in honour of God Janus), during the Medieval Age a new village was built.

Just as in its hamlet Gavignano, the Forano Castle (X-XI century) rises on the site of  an older Roman Villa. In 1308 Forano and Collenero Castles became part of the S. Eustachio family proprieties. The Savelli family owned the Castle until 1599 when it was sold to the Strozzi family. Later in XIX century, thanks to a victory during a gambling game (as the tradition goes), the Sauve family won it. During S. Eustachio family domination Forano saw the first important urban changes: enlargement of the town with walls all around it and a new entrance gate to the town.

During the same period a new Church, Chiesa della Madonna del Transito which collapsed in 1936, was built in addition to a new western defence tower.

Did you know?

Gavignano Sabino is Forano fraction and its inhabitants are called ‘nzaccanebbia (someone always surrounded by fog). During the Roman Empire it was already very populated. Some findings evidence from that time are typical ancient walls made up with blocks of local stone. The ancient town center with its tight streets and solid perimeter walls still maintains its old medieval appearance. In Gavignano square you can see the ancient arch with its clock dating back to 1200.

Places of interest

In the main square of the historic center you can see the baroque SS. Trinità Church and Palazzo Sauve.  One of the best attractions of the town is SS. Trinità Church donated by the Duke Luigi Strozzi to the population in 1682. This beautiful Church has a brickwork facade, an entrance portal with door jambs and architrave topped by a curved tympanum. It is considered the most important historical heritage of the town. In the historic center there is a wonderful marble portal, with columns for door jambs, topped by ashlar stones showing the antiquity of this building close to the Ducal Palace (XVIII century). The Strozzi family built the Ducal Palace on the ruins of an ancient fortress. Its presence dominates the view from the surronding  areas and the best views from Forano are visible from behind.

Entering the village you arrive in via del passeggio where you can visit the Waldensian Evangelical Church strongly desired by Luigi Angelini and opened in 1894 and St. Sebastiano Church dedicated to the patron sain of the town.

Forano is European city of sport and it has many sports facilities, the most important is considered the  velodrome, known throught Europe.
